Western Maine Art Group Headlines from their Special History Issue, 2007 Newsletter: The Western Maine Art Group: A Brief History - The Western Maine Art Group was founded in 1962 by Hungarian artist Lajos Matolcsy (1905-1982) and two of his students, Lee Bean and Ellie Viles. Matolcsy was a well-known artist in Hungary, a graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. After World War ll he escaped to Germany, then emigrated to New York. There he met and married a Maine-born woman who introduced him to the Oxford Hills. The couple and their infant son moved to an old farm on Ryerson Hill in the town of Paris. (Be sure to sign up for the newsletter by calling (207) 739-6161 - Don't miss another issue) The Sidewalk Art Show: In 1967 the WMAG created an art show that would start a trend, an open-air, public exhibit and sale. The event was a partnership with local organizations, who held a street dance the night before the show and presented a band concert the evening of the show. In 2007 the Sidewalk Art Show celebrates it's 40th anniversary. (Be sure to attend and support our local artists.) The Schoolhouse: The Sidewalk Art Show was an important step in presenting art publicly. But the WMAG's other goal, a permanent facility for exhibits and teaching was never far from the group's thoughts. The opportunity appeared about the time the Sidewalk Art Show was started, when the Main St. school became a victim of consolidation. The town began planning to dispose of the old schools, and the Art Group approached officials about acquiring the building.
